My interest in sustainable development began at 16 years old whilst travelling around Borneo. It was a real eye-opening experience to see the vast scale of the deforestation taking place there. After my A-levels, I decided to take a gap year to go travelling – visiting places that are regularly affected by disasters such as Bangladesh, and South East Asia. It was during my time travelling that I decided to undertake my Bachelor degree in Geography at Loughborough University. Though my degree mainly focussed on physical geography, it was a very broad ranging degree covering topics from ‘Earth Surface Processes and Landforms’ and ‘Climate and Society’ to ‘GIS, Modelling and Flood Risk Management’ allowing me to develop a good knowledge of various fields.

During my Erasmus year studying at Ruprecht-Karls-Universität in Heidelberg, I did numerous modules in the South Asian Institute as well as GIS based modules which allowed me to further expand my experience with GIS using different software packages.

As part of my undergraduate degree, I wrote my dissertation on Rainwater Harvesting. Although Disaster Management was the field I was mostly interested in, I developed a growing interest in the water management field. My dissertation was focussed on public perceptions of rainwater harvesting and the associated risks of using rainwater for various things in both the private and public domain. I learnt that there is very little knowledge among the public about such things as rainwater harvesting and other such sustainable technologies. It seems that it is not very well publicised and that more communication about the importance of sustainable development needs to be published in order to make a difference in the world and help change things for the better.
